Your friends are all telling you to buy the next Fallout because it is fantastic! That’s social proof. Social proof can be from friends or complete strangers, but we are more willing to believe the opinions of random strangers than those of companies trying to sell us a product or service.
One of the most common forms of social proof is reviews. As a game dev, it is very important to get a solid base of reviews at launch to keep that positive momentum going. You can do this by giving free review copies to early supporters, big fans, streamers and press. Don’t try to influence the reviews in any way. Your game should stand on its own, but there is nothing wrong with distributing free copies and asking for some honest reviews.
