Cognitive Switching Penalty
The price you pay for multi-tasking.
Technically humans can’t multi-task; we can only task switch. Every time we task switch this activates several parts of the brain that deal with the classification of the task at hand. This “mental overhead” results in reduced productivity every time we switch tasks. “Multi-tasking” can result in up to a 40% loss in productivity, lower quality of production, and higher error rates [Source].
To avoid the cognitive switching penalty, schedule different types of work in blocks. As a game dev, you will have to switch between many tasks like design, programming and marketing. Don’t try to switch between these constantly throughout the day. Work on one set of similar tasks for a few hours, then switch to another.
